Christmas Day Swim for Shoes

More than 200 people were on the beach to take part and/or see the Christmas Day "Swim for Shoes" on the beach in front of the Hotel Garbe in Armacao de Pera, Algarve and help to raise more than 800 Euros to buy new shoes for children in an Algarve Orphanage.

Father Christmas was well represented - more than thirty attended. Who after singing "We wish you a Merry Christmas" ran down to the waiting sea.

Certificates were awarded to all those who got wet and everyone enjoyed a very welcome glass of Mulled Wine in the Hotel Garbe bar afterwards.

Thank you to everyone who participated.

In order to raise more funds - there is another "Swim for Shoes" on 1st Janauary at 11.00am - just the way to recover from the festivities of New Years Eve - welcome in 2008 by paddling or swimming in the Atlantic Ocean - what an achievement !
Please join us - Fancy Dress Optional.
Our thanks to John Oliver who took these photographs

Preferred Travel - Walking in the Algarve

Contributed by Preferred Travel Services

8th March, 2008 - 7 nights

12th April, 2008 - 7 nights

Day one: Transfer to the Hotel Garbe in Armacao de Pera, just 45 minutes away from Faro Airport.

Days two-seven: There are three full day walks - as each walk is split into two parts you have the flexibility of deciding for yourself how much walking you do.

Walk One - transfer by coach to Monchique town for your morning walk to Malhada (5 miles– moderately easy). This is a beautiful walk that takes you deep into the heart of countryside that sees very, very few visitors. Life continues as it has done for centuries - fields in the valley are ploughed using the family mule and those on the hillsides by hand. You will pass through ancient woodlands and cork forests where you discover mountain flora such as beautiful pink peonies and bushes of rare toothed lavender, not visible from the beach resorts below. Our afternoon walk is on the lower slopes of Mount Foia (3 miles – moderate). Your walk takes you through an ancient oak forest (the oldest on the Algarve) and eucalyptus woods to give you panoramic views down to the sea. On our return we stroll along old mule tracks to pass by the ruins of the 17th century monastery of Nossa Senhora de Desterro (Our Lady of Exile), destroyed by an earthquake in 1755.

Walk Two – transfer to Praia de Marinha for the morning walk along the cliff tops (5 miles – moderately easy). This will be a circular walk along the cliff tops where the coastline is considered to be one of the most picturesque on the Algarve. Multi-coloured cliffs, hidden sandy beaches, spectacular blow holes and the scent of wild aromatic herbs make this a walk not to be missed. Bring plenty of film for the camera as there is a view waiting to be ‘snapped’ around every corner.Transfer to Silves for our afternoon walk of the Arade and Odelouca rivers (3 miles – easy). This delightful walk follows the old levada (water channel) as it carries water around the hillsides above the banks of the Arade and Odelouca rivers, which are home to many wading birds. There are wild flowers in abundance including paper white narcissi, the beautiful rock rose and the naked man orchid. Our return is along quiet country lanes where the air is heavy with the scent of orange and lemon blossom and time just seems to stand still.

Walk Three – transfer to Barao S. Joao for the morning walk of the National Forest (5 miles – easy). In the western Algarve the National Forest is a small area of woodland where strenuous efforts are being made to preserve the indigenous vegetation. The walk passes through areas planted with umbrella pines, acacia trees and arbutus bushes. The margins of the woodlands offer panoramic views over an unspoilt countryside to the Serra of Monchique. You will then transfer to Lagos and your afternoon walk along the coastal path from Luz to Burgua (3 miles – easy). This section of coastal path is renowned not only for its views but also for being a haven for orchids – especially the bee orchid. Hidden deep in the grasses you have every chance of seeing the yellow ophrys, the sawfly ophrys and the rare Iberian mirror ophrys. If you would like to stretch your legs further, we are also offering a half day optional excursion into the Cape St Vincent Natural Park for a walk there too (5 miles – moderately easy). This is a quite beautiful walk along a section of coastline deep within the Cape St Vincent Natural Park, which remains hidden from most visitors to the Algarve. The Park has a spectacular selection of flowers which are unique to the region and this optional walk gives you the chance to discover them for yourselves, including the bright yellow flowers of asteriscus maritimus, the delicate grape hyacinth, the unusual barbary nut and the rare milky white vetch.

You will, of course, also have free time to explore Armacao de Pera, or take the weight off your feet and spend some time on the beach.

Day eight (or fifteen): free until departure to the airport for your return flight.

Coming up - Christmas Day Swim for Shoes

Some of the Christmas, 2006 swimmers

We are doing it again - here are the details:-
Christmas Day Swim for Shoes
Now the Christmas decorations are appearing in the shops perhaps you are starting to think about what to do and where to be on Christmas Day. The place to be will be on the beach at Armacao de Pera in front of the Hotel Garbe with other adventurous people willing to go for a paddle or a swim in the Atlantic Ocean to help raise money for the Swim for Shoes Appeal

All you need to do is turn up at 11.00 a.m on Christmas Day with swimwear, towel and go in for a full swim or just a paddle – the choice is yours as long as part of you gets wet! Then we can all recover in the Hotel Garbe bar with a drink of mulled wine on Christmas Day and hot chocolate on New Years Day, generously donated by The Hotel Garbe, to everyone who has taken part.

Buying shoes for the children who are in care is an ongoing expense and we want to help as many as possible start 2008 with a new pair of shoes. Each child of school age needs a pair of gym shoes and a pair of trainers. Whilst some clothes can be second hand owning a pair of new shoes helps to ensure the children feel good and fit in at school.

Adults and children are all welcome to take part on the understanding that you do so at your own risk. If you have family and friends staying over the festive season it will certainly be something different to do!
The total raised for the swims on Christmas Day and New Years Day was over € 1,200.00 . This was all given to pay for school shoes for the teenagers at A Gaivota in Albufeira which is run by the Santa Casa da Misericordia. The children have asked for their thanks to be sent to all who took part . The girls and boys really enjoyed choosing their own shoes as this was the first time they had been able to do so. In the shoe shop the girls kept bumping into girls from their school doing the same thing with their mums.

If you would like to see some photographs of the Christmas Day Swim, 2006 please go to http://newsatgarbe.blogspot.com/2007/01/swim-for-shoes.html

On Christmas Day we hope people will come with either a Santa outfit or hat which are in some stores now . Buy yours now before stocks run out. We will have a limited supply of outfits and hats for sale on the day. If we can raise more money this year then we can extend the scheme to other homes.
You will have another opportunity to Swim for Shoes on New Years Day but this time we hope to see you there in fancy dress so start planning your outfit now

As this is a charity event we will gratefully accept all donations offered

Network Christmas Fayre at the Hotel Garbe

Contributed

Network, the organisation for women working in the Algarve, are delighted to report that their annual Christmas Fayre was once again the event of the season. We were privileged and excited to have Santa with us this year, and he will now become a regular and firm fixture, bringing pleasure for the children, and raising money for Castelo dos Sonhos.

This annual event attracted over 70 diverse stall holders, and there really was something for everyone. We had fashion flashes, jewellery, food, books, linen, furnishings, Tarot readings, pet products – to name but a few.

Thanks to everyone involved we were able to raise 1500 euros for our Charity of the Year, Riding for the Disabled Algarve.

The lovely venue of the Hotel Garbe provided as ever a great atmosphere, good food, and even a lovely pool for Santa to cool his feet after a hard day’s ho ho ho-ing!

To see more pictures displaying the array of stalls, and more on Santa and his elves, please visit http://picasaweb.google.com/HotelGarbe.

To book your stall for next year’s Xmas Fayre, please contact Paulette Fouché at
info@networkalgarve.org, who will be taking reservations from January onwards.

Dear Helen and Jane

Thank you so much for your excellent arrangement. We had a wonderful week in Algarve. Everything was perfect; your hotel with facilities, quiet room with no disturbance, courteous and helpful staff, possibility to keep the room some hours longer by departure, car hire, pick up service to/from hotel/airport, the beach, and not to forget the warm and sunny weather.

Gramcho and Pinta were for us a great experience, challenging, nice landscape and both courts very well taken care of. My wife seems to have a small preference for Pinta. Myself I must say both - and highly to recommend. We will next time ask for your proposal for other courts, but are sure we also must be back to Pinta and Gramacho.

Thank you both again for making our stay so successful and are already looking forward to our stay next year.

Our very best wishes,

Wenche & Hans-Jørgen

Santa Claus is coming to town

Father Christmas is on his way and this year he is making the last part of his journey to the Hotel Garbe in a traditional Algarvian fishermans boat ! We caught up with him and his special helper , Percy Penquin, on the beach loading up his boat with presents .
Percy has swum all the way from the South Pole to help. Both Father Christmas and Percy have a special appearance to make at the Network Christmas Fair at the Hotel Garbe on Sat Dec 1st from 11.00 - 5.00 p.m. Just follow the Penquin Trail in the hotel to find him. Father Christmas will give all proceeds to Castelo dos Sonhos to help make Christmas a happier time for lots of people.
So, helped down to the sea by local fisherman Paulo and his friends , off they set. Put the date in your diary as Father Christmas and Percy will be waiting to see you and find out just what you would like for Christmas.

Hello Helen,

It sure is horrible to be back here, its freezing. I played in a golf match on Sunday morning (in the fog) I'm not joking, we teed off on the 1st and after 80 yards of ball flight nothing, you just had to follow your line and hope you found your ball, it was like this for 3 hours or until we teed off on the 14th.Not much fun at all.

We got to the airport in plenty of time in the end and the drivers were very understanding, thank Joao for me if you would.

Wifie had a fantastic time, she really did chill out unwind and relax, she loved spending her days on the beach, and evenings in the Raj, it has certainly changed her ideas about self catering holidays. She's already asking when we can come back to the Garbe.

The Go Karting was fantastic, we went there 3 times, first on the small karts then we had to make one last trip to go on the 390cc karts very fast and exciting most enjoyable. The golf was great to, Silves was awesome cant wait to play it again, The Gramacho now feels like my home course so I played really well round there ,its still my favourite.

Everyone of us had a brilliant time, it worked so well for all of us, a laugh a minute and I'm positive we will be celebrating many other special occasions at the Garbe, including my 50th, but that's a long way off yet Ha Ha.

Now back to organising the golf Golf trip for May, there's been a few changes so I'll mail you our up to date itinerary when its ready.

Very Best Regards Chris xxx

Days Out - Cova dos Mouros Mining Park

Close to Alcoutim, the Cova dos Mouros Mining Park uses a series of historical reconstructions to tell the story of man’s dedication to the mining and working of metals over a period of five thousand years.

In the course of an open-air walking tour over a distance of roughly one kilometre – a path that your children can also follow on the back of a donkey – you will discover reconstructions of a prehistoric house, with human figures from the period at work, as well as seeing the variety of tools that they used.

This educational park shows the history of the development of mining and metal work in the Algarve. The tour begins in the Chalcolithic period (2500 BC), at a time when man first discovered that by heating and beating copper with a hammer he could transform it into different shapes and make a variety of tools that would facilitate his everyday tasks, such as the saws and axes that have been found here.

Next, you will pass through the Bronze Age (1500 BC) – the period when this alloy of copper and tin was discovered – and then into the Iron Age (8th century BC), when new techniques were introduced for the smelting of ores, such as the use of a north-facing tunnel furnace, which made it possible to take advantage of the winds and achieve higher temperatures.

With the arrival of the Romans in the Iberian Peninsula in the 3rd century BC, the ore began to be mined and worked in open trenches by slaves and criminals sentenced to forced labour. The tour ends with a reconstruction of the period of the Industrial Revolution, through the use of mining trucks, mining sounds, the mouths of mines and other objects that were used at the time and which can now be discovered by those who visit this place.

The whole mining park is situated in a very beautiful natural environment and so it also represents an excellent way of exploring nature, for here, in the midst of a pleasant smell of rock-rose and rosemary, you will see birds of prey hovering overhead, as well as Azure-Winged Magpies, Hoopoes, Woodpeckers, Peacocks, Australian Emus, Sudanese Sheep and African Goats.

1st November - Bank Holiday

November, 1st is a Bank Holiday in Portugal.

It is All Saints day.The first All Saints' Day occurred on May 13, 609 (C.E.) when Pope Boniface IV accepted the Pantheon as a gift from the Emperor Phocas. Boniface dedicated it as the Church of Santa Maria Rotonda in honor of the Blessed Virgin and all martyrs. During Pope Gregory III's reign (731-741), the festival was expanded to include all saints and a chapel in St. Peter's church was dedicated accordingly. Pope Gregory IV officially designated the day in 837.
