Alan Mason is a former Gardens Manager to the Queen’s cousin at Harewood House in Yorkshire and has presented gardening programmes on TV and radio for over 20 years. Since 1987 Alan has run his own Garden Design business (now with Marylyn) and is considered to be one of Europe’s top garden designers.
Marylyn Webb was for 17 years, Senior presenter and producer at Yorkshire Television, specialising in News, Current Affairs and the Environment. She agreed to make a gardening series at Harewood House and that led to a name change as she is now Marylyn Mason. For 10 years Alan and Marylyn ran their own TV production company where they made gardening programmes from Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Holland.
The course will look at the changing styles of gardens throughout Europe and history. It will show how and why fashions have come and gone. There will be instruction on garden design, looking at the “bone structure” of a garden, the creation of rooms and the decoration of them. The use of plants to create different styles and atmospheres will be explored. Examples will be given from some of the best gardens throughout Europe, both large and small. We will look at how to add value to a property and to make it more desirabe and saleable. There will be an opportunity to develop thoughts, ideas and schemes for participants own gardens with Alan and Marylyn. After this course, Alan and Marylyn will be available throughout January and February to offer garden design consultations for clients. It is also hoped that a series of instructive local garden visits can be arranged.
Price per person to include the course and 6 nights accommodation sharing twin landview room and breakfast is 266 Euros per person.
Non residents – course only – 140 Euros per person
Fishing continues to be an important local activity and local fishermen can still be seen mending their nets on the beach of Armacao de Pera, selling their catch to the local market, and during the summer months they will take holidaymakers for a trip along the coastline to see the fascinating rock formations, caves and grottos.

I would just like to say a very big thank you for looking after us so well on our recent ‘honeymoon’ break. Steve and I both had an absolutely wonderful time – we couldn’t believe the difference in the weather to February and how nice it was to walk out in the evening – in daylight! It was the best holiday we’d ever had.
We love Armacao and the Garbe so much that we could never contemplate going anywhere else – why would we want to?
We are definitely coming back next May (as well as February) and I am now looking at coming back for my (big) birthday next September.
Thank you again and look forward to seeing you in February.
Very many thanks,
Julie (and Steve)
A Journey through dance of the Middle East
7 nights - 300 Euros per person
Each break consists of seven nights accommodation sharing a twin landview room, breakfast, afternoon tea and biscuits and a place on our Middle Eastern Dancing Course
The course consists of four 3-hour sessions
From the desert sands of Morocco and Tunisia to the African borders and Nile Delta, we are entering on an historical journey, exploring dance in its many elements. The sensuous classical Beledi of Egypt, from which we have coined ‘Belly Dance’, elements from ancient Persia, fast Gypsy rhythms through Andalusia to fusions of India and world music, from Cairo to New York. Learn the ancient and the modern, exploring many cultures as you learn the techniques and appreciation of the many different styles which today form one of the largest and most exciting dance movements in the world.
Your tutor specialises in teaching control and isolation of movement, enabling students to build confidence early in their experience. Age and ability is no barrier to learning this wonderful form of self expression. Over fifteen years as a teacher have given your tutor knowledge of the potential blockages and ways to facilitate learning. In the past she has enabled students with many disabilities, including steel hips and blindness, to take part and feel special.
This course will take you through the basic movements, gaining co-ordination skill along the way which enables the use of veils, scarves and finger cymbals, building to dance choreography. Costume and make-up will also be explained as part of the overall performance skill.
The course takes place in the beautiful Raj at the Garbe with views through the palm trees, over the sand with waves lapping the shore. Classes are divided into two one and a half hour sessions daily. Extra classes can be arranged. Photo shoots on the beach can also be arranged as a special memento of your stay.
Price per person to include the course and 7 nights accommodation sharing twin landview room and breakfast is 300 Euros per person.
