1st November - Bank Holiday

November, 1st is a Bank Holiday in Portugal.

It is All Saints day.The first All Saints' Day occurred on May 13, 609 (C.E.) when Pope Boniface IV accepted the Pantheon as a gift from the Emperor Phocas. Boniface dedicated it as the Church of Santa Maria Rotonda in honor of the Blessed Virgin and all martyrs. During Pope Gregory III's reign (731-741), the festival was expanded to include all saints and a chapel in St. Peter's church was dedicated accordingly. Pope Gregory IV officially designated the day in 837.

FREEMASONS AID ONCOLOGY UNIT - FARO

Contributed

On Monday 8th October the Worshipful Master Eddy de Bie and Brother John Gilbert from The Lodge of Discoveries No.9409 of the English Freemasons in the Algarve had the pleasure of handing over a cheque for 2.000€ to the Representative of the “Associação Oncológica do Algarve” (AOA), Sra. Maria de Lurdes Pereira at the Hotel Garbe in Armacão de Pera.

As is customary within Freemasonry the Worshipful Master chooses a charity to which he wishes to donate funds. Which, with the help of the Brethren and their Ladies is raised through various events organized during his year in office, i.e. B:B:Q, Lunches and the high light of the year, the Ladies Night held at the Hotel Garbe, which went with a bang thanks to the professionalism of the Management and Staff.

The Worshipful Master Eddy de Bie chose to support the Cancer Research Unit in Faro as the charity for his year in office. The AOA is currently building a hostel in Faro, near the Radiotherapy Unit, where patients coming from different parts of the region may stay whilst undergoing radiotherapy treatment, therefore this cheque will be put to good use supporting this project.

Without the help and support of his fellow Masons he could not have achieved raising this sum of money and he wishes to thank all and everyone for their combined efforts. Sra. Maria de Lurdes Pereira expressed her admiration for the charitable work that the English Freemasons in the Algarve are currently engaged in and gave heartfelt thanks on behalf of the Associação Oncológica do Algarve for this wonderful donation and assured that it will be faithfully applied by the AOA.

Subject: Mr & Mrs Roberts Visit

Both my wife and I wanted to send a note to express our sincerest thanks for making our first holiday together in 5 years such a wonderful experience.

Your hotel was recommended by a colleague at my wife's company and it was a holiday we were so looking forward to.

The location was perfect, our room (303) had a balcony where we could look over the pool and ocean, you provided a refrigerator no sooner than we had requested and the service from the maid through to the bar, restaurant and reception was always accommodating and attentive.

The choice of food at breakfast and dinner was excellent with service being first class.

We enjoyed the experience so much we will be booking again this coming week and hope to be back in May joining many of your other guest's who, like us, have found the Garbe to be everything you would want in a holiday.

We look forward to our next visit.

Regards

John & Jane Roberts

Literary Event - Thursday, 15th November, 2007

Eça de Queiroz

Considered one of the greatest novelists of the 19th century José Maria Eça de Queiroz, or simply Eça de Queiroz as he is better known, was born in 1845 in Póvoa de Varzim, a small fishing town, as the illegitimate son of a prominent magistrate.
Author of several novels, most translated into English, Eça published great works of literature, some of which would not go into print until after his death in 1900. Among others The Maias, one of his best known novels, was written during his 15 years working as a consul in England, a country he often analysed as fiercely as he did his own.

A great observer and a critic, Eça’s writing is stylish but not heavy. With a great dosage of humour and a pinch of cynicism, his novels and texts are far from belonging in the past. While reading his work one realises, almost shockingly, that the past is still happening today.

Find out more

On November 15th 2007, Dr. Ana Luísa Vilela, a lecturer at the University of Évora will be at the Hotel Garbe to unveil the author behind the books. Holding a doctorate in Portuguese Literature and having specialised in Queiroz's work, Dr. Ana Vilela has published various articles about this author in Portugal and abroad.

This is a great opportunity for everyone who wants to take a closer look at Portugal and its society: looking at the past to understand the present. For those of you who are already familiar with Eça’s works – and many books have been sold here in the Algarve – this is an excellent opportunity to learn a bit more.

Times as follows:

10.30am: Introduction and documentary about Eça de Queiroz
12.30pm: Lunch
2pm: Talk about Eça's life and work followed by time for discussion and questions.
