Date for your Diary - Fatacil - 21st-29th August, 2009

FATACIL

Every year, since 1980, when it was held for the first time, FATACIL – the Lagoa Handicraft, Tourism, Agriculture, Trade and Industry Fair – brings thousands of visitors to the town of Lagoa.

Besides the festive atmosphere that is to be found in the town all week long, visitors are attracted by the enormous quantity and diversity of products that can be found here. With products ranging from woven articles, copper and wrought iron, lace, wooden objects, pottery and ceramics, cork articles, wickerwork and basketry, everything can be found.

It is also possible to fine some of the finest examples of the traditional Algarve cuisine not only the genuine sausages (morcelas – a kind of black pudding – or farinheiras – pork sausages made with flour) and smoked hams, but also the famous regional sweetmeats and desserts (based on figs, almonds and flour), dry fruits and nuts, medronho (arbutus-berry brandy) and fig liqueur, as well as tasty cheeses made from ewes’ milk.

There is a varied programme of entertainment every day, with performances including shows and concerts produced by some of the best and most popular Portuguese musicians. This is a an event that you cannot afford to miss!

Recipe from Portugal - Lulas Recheadas

Stuffed Squid
Ingredients: (4 servings)

1 Kg of squid (medium sized pieces)
100g smoked ham
2 medium onions
2 cloves garlic
5 medium tomatoes, quartered and de-seeded
1 egg
Bay leaf , Parsley, Olive Oil, Salt and pepper

How to cook:

Clean the squid

For the stuffing, chop one onion, one garlic cloves, the ham and the tentacles from the squids and mix them together. Crack the egg into this mixture and blend thoroughly. Then stuff the squid sacs with the mixture and close them with bits of a toothpick.

Fry the other chopped onion and garlic in a casserole dish for a couple of minutes, add the tomatoes, the bay leaf, some parsley, salt and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes. Add the squids and a little water to cover if necessary, put the casserole lid on and simmer for half an hour. Water may be added if you think the mixture is starting to dry during cooking.

Royal British Legion Training

Contributed

The Royal British Legion Portugal Branch recently held a three-day Caseworkers’ Training Course at the Hotel Garbe in Armação de Pêra. It was the first ever Training Course to be held in Portugal and will be repeated annually in keeping with RBL policy.
21 volunteer delegates attended the course, which had been arranged by Mark Hanmer, the Training Officer for Portugal and Des Briggs, the Welfare Officer. They came from all over the country including Madeira, Coimbra, Lisbon, Central and Eastern Portugal as well as all parts of the Algarve. The course trainer was Brian Simpson, who trains Caseworkers all over Europe and who did an excellent job. Paul Rodwell, the British Consul to the Algarve, was the Guest Speaker and was highly enlightening on what the Consular Service can and cannot do.

Before this course, Portugal had had only a handful of trained Caseworkers, who were becoming a little stretched with the rise in the number of Cases over recent years. Now the Legion in Portugal will be able to respond more effectively and the workload of the volunteers will be spread more evenly. Backed up by an ongoing policy of training in all areas of work the Legion does, the Portugal Branch has succeeded in becoming professionally run when all its Committee are volunteers. Membership at the moment stands at around 260; an all-time high in its 54-year history.
