The second "Algarve Ladies Lunch" took place at the Hotel Garbe in Armacao de Pera on Tuesday, 17th April - almost 90 ladies from five different clubs participated.

Helen Denman (right) President of the Eastern Ladies Lunch group, opened the proceedings, welcoming the ladies of five clubs to the lunch

Helen is pictured here with Maureen Yould, President of the Western Algarve Ladies Lunch Group - who organised the first "Algarve Ladies Lunch".

The ladies enjoyed a three course buffet lunch and the opportunity to meet old and make new friends.

After lunch, each of the Presidents spoke for a few minutes about their club.

Doreen Sell, from the Hill Billy Ladies told us that in addition to lunches the group also has organised boat trips, Easter bonnet competitions and Cookery Demonstrations.

From the Western Algarve Ladies Jill Pearce told us that the group started in 1992 and held monthly lunches with speakers, also that they organised autumn coach holidays for their members.

Margaret Gobby spoke about the "youngest" club - the Lunch Bunch -just two years old.

We then heard from Pauline Thurman whose group of Probus Ladies from Oxford were enjoying a week's holiday at the Hotel Garbe. Probus is a club for retired or semi retired business people.

Helen Denman spoke about the Eastern Ladies Group which was the founding luncheon club in the Algarve way back in 1990.

Recipes from the Algarve - Dom Rodrigos

Ingredients (Makes 6)
250 g of fios de ovos (an egg-yolk sweet) ;
50 g of husked, grated almonds ;
250 g of sugar ;
0.5 dl of water ;
4 egg yolks ;
cinnamon to taste

Preparation:
Place 200 g of sugar in a pan and cover it with water. Bring to the boil and boil for two minutes until the sugar forms pearl-like drops when dripped from a spoon.

Take off the heat and stir in the almonds. Wait until mixture is lukewarm, then add the egg yolks and place on the heat again, stiring until the mixture thickens. Sprinkle with a little cinnamon.

With the remaining sugar and water, make a syrup by boiling until the sugar forms a string when dripped from a spoon. Pour the syrup into a frying-pan and bring to the boil. When it boils, add the fios de ovos and the previously made mixture of sugar, almonds and egg yolks. Mix until the mixture is completely blended.

Let everything brown and then take it out of the frying-pan.

Distribute the mixture in equal amounts among 6 squares of coloured foil, join the four corners of each square and roll them up.

Creative Writing - Additional Course

Over the last two years Jenny Grainer has held several very successful writing workshops at the Hotel Garbe in Armação de Pera.

Some have been over four half days a week others over two days and even a one day course of six hours.

Now in order to fit in with yet another schedule, Jenny plans to do two half - day workshops over two weeks on the 28th April and 5th May.

Students who have longed to write for many years will be inspired by what they will learn and even seasoned writers can find inspiration and ideas within the group.

Through creative writing innermost thoughts can be brought to the surface and the imagination released to take off in any direction.

Learn how to write simple press releases, articles and news stories or start that book or memoirs for the family.

The workshop won’t make you a writer but it will release whatever natural talent lies within and apart from all that it will be a lot of fun.

For further details and to book contact Vicki at the Hotel Garbe on 282 320 260 or Jenny on 963518184
