In 2006 a society for artists was established in the Central Algarve by Harry Hopley and Hazel (Sally) Dawson. They named the society the “Algarve Artists Society”, AAS for short. The first meeting was held on 15th May, 2006 at the Hotel Garbe in Armação da Péra and the first members joined at this meeting. Following this the AAS now holds a meeting on the third Monday Evening of every month at the Hotel Garbe.Each month the members can, if they wish, enter a painting competition with the subject being the theme of the month. This is then judged at the meetings. Painting can also be done at these meetings, although the society has arranged for guest speakers to give a talk on the many aspects of painting. .
In the Summer the meetings are held on the terrace outside the Raj Restaurant, the members can then sit and take in the beautiful sea view. The AAS does also arrange special subjects for the group and can offer some advice to beginners. Every month a Newsletter is sent out by email to all the members. This gives information on past meetings and winners of the monthly competitions. Also future events and any other business are mentioned. This year it is hoped to arrange Open Air meetings at various interesting spots in the Algarve.
