A Study Visit to the Hotel Garbe

We are the 16 students of the Bar Service Course of the School of Armação de Pêra, who visited the Hotel Garbe on 9th May, 2007.

Now we are almost finishing this school year and next year will be our turn to work as trainees.

Under these circumstances, we came to visit the Hotel Garbe, which our school has had the pleasure and the luck to cooperate with.



Last year five students, from the 13 of a previous course, have been working in this hotel as trainee barmen and barmaids for about three months and after a final exam in July, they have got a 2nd level certificate in the professional area of Bar Service. From these 13 teenagers some went on studying for the 3rd level in professional schools and others began working in the hotels where they’ve performed their trainings.



About our course, and just to give you an idea about the skills and competences we have to achieve, let us tell you that there are three main areas of studies: the social cultural, the scientific and the technological.

The first includes several subjects, i.e. Portuguese, English, History and Citizenship, Physical Education, Information Technology and Health, Hygiene and Security at Work. The second area includes Maths and German Language and the technological area includes the specific subjects of Bar Service. In what concerns this specific area we have 384 hours of lessons during the year. 65% from these lessons are spent in practical activities related to cafeteria, drinks service and special services.

Enclosed to this short explanation we are sending some photos of our visit to your hotel.

Popular Saints

Three Saints Days are celebrated in Portugal June. The 13th is St. Anthony’s day, the 24th is St. John and the 29th St. Peter.

Saints’ days are full of fun and dancing.

The streets are decorated with balloons and arches made out of brightly-coloured paper; people dance in the city’s small squares.

International Festival of Sculpture in Sand (FIESA),

The 2007 International Festival of Sculpture in Sand (FIESA), in Pera dedicated to `The Wonders of the World and Portugal' will open on 7th June, 2007.

Fifty sculptors of twenty different nationalities are already working at the site in Pera to construct 15 monuments, using thirty five thousand tons of sand.

The Temples of Angkor, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Eiffel Tower the Pyramids of Giza, the Lighthouse of Alexandria and the Empire State Building, in New York are some of the monuments that will be featured

Part of the exhibition will be dedicated entirely to Portugal, with constructions including the Tower of Belém, a Portuguese caravela and a statue in sand of the Fernando Pessoa.

During the four months of the Exhibition 170,000 visitors are expected, the festival closes on 7th October, 2007.

Painting on the beach of Armacao de Pera - Feburary

'Harp John' Dinner

On 6th and 7th June the Raj at Garbe will be hosting an evening of wonderful entertainment, a three course Indian Dinner, accompanied by the languid sounds of 'Harp John".

John Dalton aka Harp John has been playing the harp for many years. Fluent in three different types of harp (the Celtic harp, the larger Paraguayan harp and the Electroharp) he plays a diverse variation of music, from popular classics to Strauss waltzes, jazz standards, pop hits, golden oldies and a wide range of Celtic and Latin American pieces as well.

Furthermore since coming to the Algarve, John has even started to play typical Portuguese Fado.

Standing Ovation Algarve has the great pleasure of launching him in his first public appearance.

On 6th and 7th June, John will be giving a talk on the history of the harp, illustrated with many musical examples from around the world. The story of the harp will take listeners from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia to ancient Ireland and Britain across to South America with the Conquistadors and on through the centuries to the present day.

A fun, light hearted and relaxing experience not to be missed.

The event will be held in the Raj Indian Restaurant in the Hotel Garbe and will include a three course Indian Dinner with wine. - 7.30 pm - 8.00pm - 30 Euros per person.

Classes have been held on a regular basis in the stunning location of the Raj at the Garbe for three years now, enjoyed by many students who travel from far afield.

Up to now the sessions have been held on Saturdays on alternate weeks. From June the 4th a new class will be added on alternate Mondays from 2.30 to 4.30.

Aimed primarily at students who have never ventured into this art form before there will be a few more experienced students who can’t get enough of a good thing and have been demanding extra sessions to their fortnightly fix.

It is hoped these new classes will accommodate those who are tied up with ‘change-overs’ and have needed to avoid Saturdays and working mums who need to be around at the weekends for their duties as family taxi drivers.

If you have ever dreamed of finding the real sensual you come and give it a try, you don’t need to have had any previous dance experience and diets are definitely banned, the more curves the better!

Swim for Shoes - Update and Thank you

We were delighted to receive this photograph with the e-mail below from A Gaivota, Santa Casa in Albufeira which is the Orphanage we supported when we "Swam for Shoes" on Christmas Day and New Years days.

I met with Fatima at the shoe shop and we had great fun choosing with the girls, she brought them in two bus loads. They were all so well-behaved and polite and asked me to send on their thanks to everyone who helped raise the money.
Fatima has also bought shoes at Makro, and is taking the boys to buy sports shoes.

It is so nice that the teenagers can choose their own shoes, in the shoe shop they kept bumping into girls from their school doing the same thing with their mums, it was really good fun, and Fatima and I enjoyed it almost as much as they did.
