Subject: Letter of appreciation

Dear Sir,

My wife and I have just spent 2 weeks holiday at Hotel Garbe ( Mr & Mrs R. Harrison 29th April to 13th May Room 201)

We are 'E' Mailing to congratulate you on an exceptionally well run Hotel.

We wish to bring to your notice the friendliness, courtesy and helpfulness of your Reception Staff especially Claudia Grimberg, without whose help
we would certainly not have enjoyed our holiday so much. You are very fortunate to have staff of this caliber who advance the reputation of the Hotel.

Praise can also be given to the Room Service staff where our room was serviced to a high standard and the facilities were 1st Class.

Small things show the quality of hotels, for instance, we were having breakfast in the restauraunt and noticed one of your guests dropped her knife
which she picked up and was about to wipe it with her serviette but waiter Paulo Renato immediately took the knife and replaced it with a clean one.

All the facilities and the attitude of your staff point to a well run hotel which we will recommend to any of our friends who wish to visit the Algarve.

There is no doubt that we will be coming back to the Algarve and also without doubt we shall stay at your Hotel

Thank you once again for an excellent holiday.

Best Regards

Nesta & Ray Harrison.

William David Haines

We have a number of paintings by local artists on display in our reception, one which is currently exhibiting is William David Haines - pictured here.

Artist William David John Haines has been in the Algarve just over eighteen months, but already his feel and interpretation of the region has inspired him to create some of the most striking works of Algarvean trademark-feature art, ever seen. An accomplished artist and sculptor, William has been involved in the world of art from a very young age, having produced his first wooden sculpture at the age of nine, and his first painting at thirteen.

During the 1970's, Haines ran his own studio in the Welsh town of Newport, his paintings even then reaching high demand and being featured around numerous Welsh galleries.

His self-taught techniques have been honed into an unmistakable and captivating talent, his biggest inspiration and influence being the unique artist Van Goth, which he has studied intensely for over three decades.

Fluent in Algarvean commercial art, abstract, traditional, modern and fun art, colour plays a large part in Haines's art, using bold, captivating colours freely and on density, giving the pieces texture and life.

Painting by means of acrylic and oils, his works are produced on both canvas and wood, following main techniques also favoured by Van Goth.

His work is now creating quite a stir in the Algarve, becoming highly acclaimed and widely sought after.

Pieces may also be ordered on commission.

For more information please contact William David John Haines on 968 290 627.

Recipes From Portugal - Sopa de Pedra

Once upon a time there was an old man (a different story speaks of ‘a travelling monk’) who went begging in the Algarve from door to door, farmhouse to farmhouse. One evening he reached a lonely farmhouse in the hills and the people there gave him shelter. He was very poor but very proud. When he asked in the kitchen if he could cook himself a little soup, they agreed. But the farmer’s wife was most surprised to see the old man reach into his bag and take out a few stones. He put the stones into his cooking pot, poured water over them and put the pot on the fire. How could the old man possibly think that these stones and water would make a good soup? “Be patient for a little while,” answered the old man and left. Feeling sorry for him, the farmer’s wife took whatever vegetables she had in her own pots and added a little of each to the stones.

In a different version of the story the old man supposedly answered that the stones where all he needed, but he would like just a few things to cook with them. Whatever the story, the result was the same. Stone soup was born and it exists to this day. Sopa de Pedra is an ideal way to use up left-overs.

Sopa de Pedra - Stone Soup
1 litre water or stock 2 tbsp oil
1 onion 1 large carrot
1 green lettuce 2 slices of toast
1 egg salt, pepper

Heat the oil in a saucepan, cut onion into slices and brown in the oil. Cut lettuce and carrot into small pieces, add to the onion and pour water or stock over it. Break toast into small crumbs and add to soup. Cook for about 10 minutes, add salt and pepper to taste. Whisk the egg and pour gently into the soup.

4th International Sand Sculpture Festival

Contributed.
The Worlds Largest Sand Sculpture Event, FIESA 2006, opens its doors to public this Saturday in nearby Pera, with this years theme Mythologies.

The 4th International Sand Sculptures Festival (FIESA 2006) will open on 20th May, at 18:00h, exhibiting thirty five thousand tons of sand, sculpted in scenes and symbols of the universal mythology.

The city of sand began to be built at the beginning of April, by a group of thirty three sculptors of several nationalities.

The most known myths and Greek gods are represented in sand, as well as symbolic episodes of the Old and New Will. Another area is dedicated to the Celtic and Nordic mythology, being followed myths Assyrian, Egyptian, of India and of Africa.

FIESA, organized by Prosandart, it is the only festival of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula and, for the amount of sand used, it is the largest exhibition of sand sculptures, in the world.

In the festival, there is also a place for sand sculpture activities for public, where the children and the adults can show their creative capacity and to learn the basic techniques of this way of artistic expression.

FIESA can be visited everyday, between ten in the morning and the midnight. During the day the sculptures can be admired with all their detail and the night brings other atmosphere to the park of sculptures, FIESA in the night, illuminated by color lights, and special effects.

Thank you for your comments

We were delighted to receive this e-mail message from the Organiser of the Glyme Valley Probus Club for Ladies Group that stayed at the Hotel for the last week of April.

Hello Vicky,

Just wanted to say a very big thank you for all the help you gave me
organising our holiday.

Everyone enjoyed it and we all love your wonderful hotel.

It is still very cold here and I just close my eyes every so often and "see"
that fabulous view I had from my balcony. I can almost feel the warmth of the
sun.

Thanks again.
