Places to Visit - Ria Formosa Nature Reserve
Ria Formosa, is on the coast of the Algarve close to Faro.
A wonderful place for nature lovers to spend the day. Designated a protected nature reserve, the park covers 60km of coastline from Tavira in the east to Ancao in the west, encompassing almost the entire Formosa Estuary.
The park is made up of a narrow strip of land separated from the sea by vast sand dunes, behind which lies a labyrinth of lagoons and small sand islands, mud flats, marshes and canals.
The park holds special appeal for bird watchers, who flock to see a wide range of breeds such as the little bittern and purple heron, as well as egrets, white stork and the stone-curlew.
Many make this their breeding ground, while others use it as a migratory stopover. At the right time of year it's also possible to see the great spotted cuckoo, tawny Pipit, bluethroat, pied flycatcher and various warblers.
Some birds of prey, such as the hunting kestrel, are frequent visitors to this protected zone.
The park is also an area of great botanical interest, with woodland, marsh and dune vegetation.

The Portuguese Cockerel
The cockerel is probably one of the most popular symbols of Portugal,
.
But do you actually know why it became such a famous symbol?
.
The legend dates back to the 14th Century, and like all legends, each narrator adds his own flavour.
.In Barcelos, a small town in Portugal, a passing pilgrim, who was on his way to São Tiago de Compostela (in Spain) ,was wrongly accused of theft, for which the penalty was death. Feeling threatened in a foreign village, he only had his faith to call upon.
.He appealed to "Our Lady" and St. James (the patron Saint of protection) that justice be done.
.
The pilgrim found his way to the Judge who was to decide his fate.
.
The judge was about to commence eating a roast cockerel for his dinner. The pilgrim pleaded, "If I am innocent, that cockerel will get up and crow.
.
The cockerel at once got up and crowed heartily. The pilgrim was released and went on his way.
.
And to this day, the cockerel has been a symbol of faith, justice and good luck.

Century Plants
These are two photos which were entered in our March Photography Competition by Mrs. Lone Kallqvist.
They were taken by the beach near to the Hotel.
They are Agave plants, which are commonly called "century plants".
They live for many years as a rosette of thick, fleshy leaves, then flower once (often 30 years or so) and die.
However, by this stage they usually have produced a cluster of younger plants, it is only the rosette that produces the flowering stem dies. The other plants live on.

April Photography Competition Winner
Congratulations to Jeanette Elliott who has won the April Photography Competition.
Our Judge, Adrian Bell, an experienced wedding and portrait photographer commented: The beautiful bright and colourfully pink flower with a bee about its vital business is a very strong composition and shows a photographer with a good eye creating a powerful image rather than merely shooting whats there.
Also Highly Commended
The strong stormy sea illustrates the majesty and power of the ocean The swimmer inside the wave riding headlong to the shore
