Over the past four years regular classes have been held in the fabulous setting of the Raj Restaurant at the Hotel Garbe in Armaçao De Pera. Jeanette Elliott who tutors the class has been passing on the art of this sensual dance for more than eighteen years, formerly for Adult Education classes in Devon.
Previously the classes have always been held during the day. Now, to accommodate the growing number of requests, a new beginner’s level weekly evening class is to be held starting on Monday 17th March at 7.30, finishing at 9.00 p.m. The on-going advanced class will also change from Monday morning to late afternoon from 5 to 7.00 p.m.
Entitled ‘Middle Eastern Dance’, the class takes students through basic isolations and technique, later using props and choreography, encompassing many styles and world music influences.
Subscriptions are monthly - paid in advance - and cost 10 euros per class session.
Whatever age or dance experience you have this is a course like no other.
It is a life enhancing experience and fantastic gentle work-out for the body and mind. You do not have to be any particular age, shape, size or ability to take part. Previously this class has inspired people with hip replacements and even a registered blind lady to experience a new life through dance.

Jeanette would also like to hear from other teachers in this field of dance. In England she belonged to the Middle Eastern Dance Network which held meetings and workshops for teachers and students. It was a great chance to meet and exchange ideas, organize events and shows and help with topics related to performance and safety. It would be fantastic if we could encourage co-operation between dancers here so we can learn from each other. As a member of Network in the Algarve I value the chance to exchange ideas and as a teacher have a community of like minded friends to enhance and share what I know.
