1st Annual Shoebox Drive for the Elderly

A great success…….

The idea was to give some of the Elderly in need of the Algarve a present at Christmas – however, the generosity of the Algarve has meant a great deal more.

Firstly, David and Celia Mossman were totally overwhelmed by the number of filled shoeboxes that were handed in to be distributed by Castelos de Sonhos for the elderly this Christmas – a total of 145 were received and are currently being delivered to the elderly in need.

The Mossmans run a friends Luncheon Club, which hold a raffle at each lunch – the members agreed that the money should be for the elderly in need and the total amount of 745 Euros has bought much needed blankets

When Carol Williamson read about the campaign she and her husband Alan who is Master of Prince Henry The Navigator Lodge of English Masons in Portugal chose it as the Charity for their Ladies Festival held at the Hotel Garbe, on 3rd December. Many of their guests brought filled shoe boxes to the dinner. Their raffle and silent auction raised a staggering £1764. 00, of which €1330.00 has already been used to make up 64 Christmas food parcels for elderly persons nominated by Castelo dos Sonhos.

Maureen Yould and the Ladies of the Western Ladies Luncheon Club also decided to support the appeal and ran a Bring and Buy Cake sale at the Christmas Fair at the Hotel Garbe on 1st December, the 130 Euros from this event was used to buy warm socks.

So we would like to say a very big thank you to all who participated, (those who filled shoeboxes, the organisers of the events, the cakemakers and sellers, those who donated prizes for the raffles and silent auction) – this Christmas you have made a difference

Christmas Fair

NETWORK SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS FAIR – A FANTASTIC SUCCESS!

It just keeps on getting bigger and better! Network’s Spirit of Christmas Fair, in its fourth year at Armação de Pêra’s Hotel Garbe, turned out to be the place to be on the December 1st holiday.

Hundreds came from all parts of the Algarve and at times it was hard to see the stalls for the crowds – a great start to the Festive Fair season for sellers and buyers alike.

But probably the brightest smiles of the day were on the faces of the representatives of local charity ACCA, Network’s Charity of the Year and the beneficiaries of the Fair’s fundraising raffle and tombola stalls. A fantastic combined effort by those who donated the prizes, the ticket sellers and of course the buyers means that a record-breaking Fair charity total of €1,650 will soon be handed over to ACCA for their work supporting deprived children in the Algarve.

Thanking Network for the amazing amount raised, an ACCA volunteer said that the money would be earmarked for two projects – heating in a local children’s home and emergency surgery for a young boy with a crippling bone condition.

One of the most popular attractions on the day were the carol singing sessions, kindly staged by members of the Silves Keep Fit For Charity Club who were delighted with the generosity of the crowd in their fundraising efforts for Castelo dos Sonhos.

Santa himself had to call off because of a busy schedule but he again sent along his popular Algarve stand-in, businessman John Havery, who did him proud. Thanks, Santa!

This year’s Christmas Fair organiser, Network member Anne Parish was delighted with the success of the event and wants to say a personal thank-you to all involved.
“I can’t mention everyone individually – there was simply so much support – but they all know who they are and should give themselves a pat on the back. But on behalf at everyone at Network I do just want to make a special mention of the Hotel Garbe for their fantastic support, which they gave at no cost to the organisation. And to the stallholders and the visitors – thanks for coming – we couldn’t have done any of it without you.”

Guest Review

We went to Portugal and stayed in the Hotel Garbe the first week in November and the weather was really hot. The hotel is fantastic and very clean.

We had a sea view room which I recommend, the views were amazing you get to see the sunset.

Whilst in Portugal we had the chance to book some activities during the week so we chose to go on a Jeep Safari and visit Zoo Marine. The Jeep Safari was really good the drivers were very comical and we got to see some gorgeous views and taste some fire water. In Zoo Marine we watched a bird show, sea lion show and best of all the dolphin show. We also booked to swim with the dolphins which is the most wonderful experience ever. The dolphins are so friendly and amazing animals I recommend this activity to everyone its a once in a life time experience that you never forget.

Everyone at the hotel were very friendly and caring. Six of us stayed at Hotel Garbe (3 couples) and whilst we were there we made a huge dolphin sand sculpture which the manager took a picture of and left a free drink in the bar for us. We made alot of elderly friends whilst we were there. The bar in the hotel was quite expensive so I would suggest that you drank in happy hour 7-8pm.We would recommend to eat in the Raj Restaurant in the hotel the food is great. I also recommend the Happy Talk Chinese restaurant nearby to the hotel it was the best Chinese I had ever tasted. We are glad that we went bed and breakfast as we got to eat out in the evenings and there are loads of gorgeous restaurants in the area. The breakfast in the hotel was brilliant and had a wide variety to choose from.

Overall our stay was fantastic we really enjoyed ourselves and are hoping to go back next year.

Network Spirit of Christmas Fair
Hotel Garbe, Armação de Pêra
December 1st 11am – 5pm

If you’re already thinking about what to buy your nearest and dearest for Christmas then make a note in your diary to be at the Network ‘Spirit of Christmas’ Fair on December 1st - it is fast becoming the Christmas event in the Algarve.

The Fair is already fully booked and with even more stallholders than last year – more than 55 - you’ll have lots of craft, gift, food, home and fashion ideas to choose from.

And there’s an extra dimension to the Fair this year with a special ANTIQUES ROADSHOW.

If granny’s old teapot is gathering dust on a shelf and you’d like to know what it is worth then bring it along to the Garbe on the day of the Christmas Fair. Antiques expert Janice Paull will be happy to give advice on any old items you have you are not sure about (that doesn’t include the wife!) ...and she’ll also be happy to give hints and tips on how you can go about selling them.
Janice is a specialist in English 19th Ceramics, has been a dealer for over forty years. She is also a member of the British Antique Dealers Association, the Antique Council USA and the International Confederation of Art dealers.

Janice is donating her time and will be at the Fair all day from 11am – 5pm. In return she will be asking for donations towards the work of Network, the Fair organisers, the non-profit making organisation for working women in the Algarve. We suggest a donation of 2 euros per item and ask that you do not bring large items of furniture to the Fair. Please call in advance if you need further information.

Adding to the usual fun of the Christmas Fair will be members of Silves Keep Fit for Charity group who will be CAROL SINGING at 11.30 and 3pm, and the Western Ladies Lunch Club are holding a BRING AND BUY CAKE SALE, again in aid of their chosen charity. If you would like to help out you can take donations of cakes and candy with you on the day.

Network is also holding a RAFFLE AND TOMBOLA in aid of their charity of the year, ACCA, which supports children’s charities and deprived children throughout the Algarve. Great prizes already include a weekend break at the Garbe, luxury Christmas Hamper and much more.

Santa will also be taking time off from his busy Festive schedule to be at the Network Spirit of Christmas Fair throughout the day, encouraging passing trade to visit and to guide visitors around the attractions.

Remember, December 1st is the public holiday so gather some family and friends and make a day of it.

Have you ever watched TV coverage of keen swimmers jumping or diving into the Serpentine?

SWIM FOR SHOES

Diary dates - two opportunities to SWIM FOR SHOES where you can have a dip in the Atlantic Ocean and help to raise money for children here who are in need of new shoes.

These will be on Christmas Day and New Years Day at 11.00 a.m. on the beach at Armação de Pêra in front of the Hotel Garbe.

All you need to do is turn up with swimwear, towel and go in for a full swim or just a paddle – the choice is yours as long as part of you gets wet ! Then we can all recover in the Hotel Garbe bar where Carlos Simão, the General Manager, has very generously offered a drink of mulled wine on Christmas Day and hot chocolate on New Years Day to everyone who has taken part.

Buying shoes for the children who are in care is an ongoing expense and we want to help as many as possible start 2006 with a new pair of shoes

Adults and children are all welcome to take part on the understanding that you do so at your own risk. If you have family and friends staying over the festive season it will certainly be something different to do !

As this is a charity event we will gratefully accept all donations offered
