The Hotel Garbe has now rebranded, at the beginning of the month we changed name and are now known as the Holiday Inn Algarve, Armação de Pêra, part of the family of Intercontinental Hotels Group.

The changes to the Hotel are part of a 20-year franchise agreement whereby the hotel will benefit from the advantages associated with being part of a large group while still maintaining the management, administration, responsibility and ownership of the hotel.

Recent changes at the hotel include the refurbishment of 66 guest rooms, reception and introduction of a new fitness facility.

The dinner/dance on Saturday, 29th May at The Garbe Hotel, Armação de Pêra, was an outstanding success, with a sell-out of 120 tickets. SARABAND kindly provided the music, free of charge. A tombola together with an auction helped to increase the overall profit to more than €5,300. An initial €5,000 has been sent to the Help for Heroes charity in the UK.

The organisers of the event, Carol Williamson, Carole Good-Dixon and Heather Scott wish to thank everyone who supported their fundraising over the past weeks, for the many donations received and for the 60 plus tombola prizes provided. To those who gave free advertising, publicity and printing etc, our heartfelt thanks.

Fundraising will continue through the summer with the main emphasis on 'PHONES for HEROES' a scheme to recycle unwanted mobile phones with 60% of the proceeds being donated to H4H. To date, 'PHONES for HEROES' has raised over £40,000 for the charity and is an environmentally friendly way of disposing of your old phone, too. Details of 6 collecting points are as follows:

Having spent a great week at the Hotel Garbe in April 2009 we were eagerly awaiting our return in May 2010. This time we were delighted to bring our latest addition to the family, a 9 month old boy. I am delighted to say the Hotel once again made our holiday a memorable one for all the right reasons.

Myself and my wife along with our two children had a great holiday. We are only home a week and we are planning our next visit.

Where do I start,

1. The family suite was perfect. Very spacious with air conditioning, mini fridge, tea/coffee making facilities etc and the best beach views on the Algarve.

2. The rooms as always were spotless and the housekeeping staff always had a smile for you..oh and the entire hotel staff are so good with young children.

3. The pool was so nice and relaxed. Despite having very 'mobile' baby we all enjoyed the pool. The sun lounge area was quiet and relaxed and the beach bar was ideal for snacks and their cool freshly squeezed orange juice is something else!!

4. The buffet breakfast every morning was as good as I remembered it. It's good to see a hotel that does not cut corners on quality, the food was very good with a fine selection of hot and cold food available on the buffet.

5. The Indian cuisine at the Raj Restaurant was top notch.

6. The location of the hotel on the beach is so convenient, a minute's walk will bring you onto a beautiful beach.

7. Finally, in the evening my wife and I loved retiring to the bar for a drink to watch the sun set. The views from the bar provided the perfect backdrop to end another fine day on the Algarve.

Overall the hotel was ideal for us. It is so relaxed and you can see that on the faces of the guests, smiles all round. Friendly staff, very reasonable prices and a view of the Atlantic to die for....what else do you need.

We will definitely return in 2011.

A new book of interlinking short stories set in the Algarve in 2007. The stories chart the lives of locals, tourists and ex-pats alike while the media are focused on a little girl who has disappeared. Lisa Selvidge, a resident of the Algarve for 6 years and a graduate in Portuguese and Russian, has been inspired by the different inhabitants of the Algarve, both those who choose to make it their home and those who were born there, as well as the effects of one of the biggest media coverages the Algarve has ever known.

She has also edited a collection of writings about the Algarve called Summer Times.

The official relaunch of the hotel as the Holiday Inn Algarve is set for July 1.

Works to rebrand and redecorate the Hotel Garbe in Armação de Pêra have already begun as part of the process to convert the hotel into a Holiday Inn.

The 185-room hotel on the seafront in Armação de Pêra, which first opened its doors to clients in 1963, has already had works to refurbish the reception area of the hotel completed and 66 of the rooms in the hotel will be redecorated and brought in line with the Holiday Inn standard by the end of June, with the rest of the rooms being remodelled during the winter months.

The official relaunch of the hotel as the Holiday Inn Algarve is set for July 1. A spokesman from the Hotel Garbe told the Algarve Resident: “The hotel has not been sold and all the staff at the hotel will remain the same. This relaunch will mean that the hotel will no longer be known as the Garbe but it will retain all the quality services clients have come to know.

“It is great for the staff here who are learning new skills and this will be passed onto the clients of the hotel.”

The changes to the Hotel Garbe are part of a 20-year franchise agreement whereby the hotel will benefit from the advantages associated with being part of a large group while still maintaining the management, administration, responsibility and ownership of the hotel.

The spokesman added: “It has been sad to lose the name of the Garbe but we intend to rename perhaps the meeting room or a suite with the name Garbe to honour the tradition of the past.”

Other developments to take place at the hotel as part of the relaunch include the refurbishment of a meeting room for up to 50 delegates which is due to be completed by December 2010, new signage and logos, upgrade showers and bathroom amenities and new exterior landscaping.

Client bookings will not be affected by the changes.

This year, the Royal British Legion in the UK will be holding a series of events and services to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of VE and VJ Day.

On Wednesday the 19th May, as part of these celebrations the Royal British Legion in Portugal will hold a short service on the outside veranda at the Hotel Garbe commencing at 11.30am, followed by the RBL monthly lunch in the restaurant to which everyone is invited - please confirm your arrangements with the hotel reception.

Father Haynes, the RBL Algarve Chaplain, and Father Bob Bates will take this service and the Standard will be paraded. The service will last 20-30 minutes, and will remember not only how our Freedom was fought and won, but will also look forward to the hope of Peace in the lands where our troops are still fighting.

We came to the Garbe two years ago and vowed to try and come back every year.

We didn't make it last year but were so glad we came back again this year.

We love the hotel, the food is great, the rooms are comfy and the atmosphere is one of complete relaxation.

I've recommended it to all my friends and family and I hope they get to share that wonderful experience of breakfast on the terrace on a gorgeous sunny morning.

"Há caracois" - Snails

Caracóis are small snails which are found in the Portuguese countryside during the months of May and June.

For those who like them they are delicious.

Eaten between the months of May and July the snails are usually boiled and then flavoured with garlic and oregano.

The best snails, it is said, are those picked from fennel plants. Look for a sign reading “Há caracois”, meaning snails are on the menu.

They can be bought at most markets, to cook at home:-

1 kl. (around 35 oz.) of small/medium snails. You can pick them from your garden… :)

3 crushed cloves of garlic

1 hand full of oreganos

Salt

Wash the snails well. After they are well cleaned, place them in a pot casserole and cover them in water.

Add, garlic and oregano, bring them to the boil - simmer, stirring once in a while.

Let it cook for around 10 to 15 minutes.

Serve with chilled beer and bread. You’ll need tooth sticks to get the snails out of their shells. Enjoy!

A taste of Portugal - Prawns Piri-Piri

Ingredients
2 tbsp piri piri sauce

half a tsp chilli powder

juice of 2 lemons

24 large king prawns, raw with heads on

1 bunch of watercress

1 bunch of coriander

Method
1. Mix together the piri-piri sauce, chilli powder and lemon juice in a mixing bowl. Add the raw king prawns, coat thoroughly, cover and marinate in the fridge for 2 hours.

2. Tear the watercress and coriander into sprigs and arrange on a large serving plate.

3. Heat a heavy frying pan until hot. Dry-fry the king prawns, seasoning with a little sea salt, until they turn pink and opaque, around 3 minutes.

4. Serve at once on the watercress and coriander.

Enjoy with a light white wine from the Alentejo

Hi All at the Golf Desk,

Thank you for your mail. Be assured that the golf experience you provided was judged the best yet of our 8 trips, yes better than Vilamoura. Everyone was impressed by the whole package and already are talking of a return. ( I even think one of the lads is planning his summer holiday with you ). The hotel experience was excellent.... staff were very friendly and efficient and most importantly very sincere, - great value,- food, service, accommodation, attention to guests was very much appreciated by all. The golf was superb value. Courses were a joy to play. Thank you. We definitely will be back, and hopefully bring a few more with us. You have set yourselves a very high standard to follow, but I'm sure that is no problem for you.

Helen, no need to apologise re tee times. Your transport company was very accommodating. Any hitches were purely my fault. I should have had all that organised with you weeks before hand. I will know better next time. Some of the lads are just beginning to discover that, (as an Irish song says) "You can't do all night what you used to do all night". I mean of course drink!! and then expect to play golf early the next day. Thank you for all your help and work for us. We are singing your praises to anyone who will listen over here.

AFPOP Quiz Night success - contributed

Last Friday evening 16th April the Hotel Garbe in Armacao de Pera hosted an Indian Dinner & Quiz Night for the Albufeira AFPOP group.

Diamond Cleaning Services (Albufeira) sponsored the prize draw which allowed funds to be donated to Albufeira Bombeiros.

Following an excellent 3 course Indian meal in The Raj Restaurant the grey cells were tested by Lynn and Martin's Quiz and after a closely fought contest the winners prizes were split between two teams, both agreeing to forego the tension of a tie break question.

Caldeirada” is a typical Algarvian dish which consists of stewed fish and sea food with potatoes, onions ,tomatoes, pimentos, spices wine and olive oil.

Algarve Ladies Lunch Clubs Joint Meeting

On Tuesday April 6th members from five of the Algarve Ladies lunch clubs gathered at the Hotel Garbe in Armacao de Pera, for a very successful lunch followed by a short formal meeting.

Fifty plus members travelled from across the Algarve in order to meet and share the various activities, events and processes of their particular groups. This event had taken place before in 2005 and 2007.

Following a welcome drink, and 3 course buffet lunch the Organiser, Carole Good-Dixon, invited speakers from the five groups to give a short talk about their specific organisation. This gave all present an idea of when and where each group meets, the philosophy of how each group manages its organisation, including in several, the financial management. Some invite speakers and lunch in the same venue, whereas others travel all over the Algarve meeting in different locations each month.

Thanks go to Maureen Yould from Western, Wendy Webb from As Serranas, Lis Jensen from both Central and Eastern as well as Antje Whittle from the Lunch Bunch. As a result of their involvement members are looking forward to creating an annual event that will now build on this information and plan for a central shared issue relating to Womens’ issues. Members will be kept informed of future plans.

The success of this type of event completely relies on knowing the amount of poeple who will be present, as the circulation needs to be determined before hand. Eggs and Bonnets

The sun shined on the participants of the Hotel Garbe 1st Easter Egg Hunt, which added to the enjoyment.

Starting at the Hotel Garbe and taking in Armação de Pêras new seafront promenade the participants had to up to twenty Easter Eggs in the allocated time. The winners Mardie Cunningham and Mary King found all but four!!!!.

The Hunt was followed by an Easter Bonnet Parade and Competition. Carole Good-Dixon was the winner with her Bonnet decorated with a chocolate hen and eggs.

Both events were organised by Martin Binks and Lynn Love on behalf of Castelos dos Sonhos in Silves.

Last Saturday evening,March 20th, THE ANGELS THEATRE GROUP, in response to requests to take their Old Time Music Hall to the Western Algarve gave a performance at The Hotel Garbe, Armação de Pêra.

140 people sat down in the main restaurant to a superb three course buffet dinner with wine and were then entertained throughout the evening with a variety of songs, monologues and a melodrama in the Old Time Musical Hall tradition.

The Angels entertain for charity and their choice on this occasion was the Castelo Do Sonhos. Celia and Dave Mossman, representing the charity, arrived resplendant in period costume to welcome the audience and hand out song sheets. Other helpers, in costume strolled through the audience selling raffle tickets and receiving bids for a silent auction of an autographed bottle of wine from Sir Cliff Richard’s vineyard.

Those of the audience, who had arrived in period style costume, ,were rewarded with a ticket to enter a special free raffle.The prize being an escorted tour ,for two ,around Sir Cliff Richards vine yard – Adega do Cantor.
The enthusiastic audience joined in to sing -along to the choruses of the more well known songs. They were also in fine voice, when encouraged to boo the villain and cheer the hero in the melodrama. .
The fun evening resulted in raising 1,702.37 euros, which is the most money raised at any fund raising event for Castelo do Sonhos. This will go towards buying items from their wish list which includes beds and food.

Book Signing

On Wednesday 24 March 2010, Dr. John Piper launched his new his new book "The St. Petersburg Declaration".

The book signing was held in the Bar Boa Vista at the Hotel Garbe and was well attended by many local residents and patients of Dr. Piper.

This fascinating second novel, was written in response to the shooting of the 27 year old Brazilian man in a London Underground train in 2005 by police using expanding missiles (Dum Dum bullets); seven of the eight projectiles entered his head rendering him mutilated and unrecognizable. The result of this shocking and brutal act, is an anti-war book using the weapon of ridicule.

There will be a second book signing at the Lagoa library on Saturday 24 April at 17.00 hrs. The books have been supplied for sale by the Magna Carta Bookshop of Alvor.

Dr. Piper's first novel " Mother Killers" will also be available.

The Royal British Legion Portugal Branch recently held a three-day Caseworkers’ Training Course at the Hotel Garbe in Armação de Pêra.

Thirteen Caseworkers attended a Refreshers' Course while a further eleven attended for the first time. This was the second course of its kind held in Portugal. The course trainer, Brian Simpson, said he was delighted with the professionalism and dedication displayed by all of the delegates and that the course had been a great success.

The Guest Speaker was Paul Rodwell, the British Consul to the Algarve, who gave the delegates invaluable information about what the Consular Services could and could not do; very helpful for Caseworkers when visiting a Client and assessing the need.

Portugal now has more than 30 trained Caseworkers, but more importantly the coverage spreads out to the other parts of the country where more and more British are choosing to settle, many of whom may be eligible for Legion support.

The new networking group for working women “Network Algarve” has set up a group on the online forum LinkedIn to manage and facilitate all future communications and announcements.

A very well attended meeting was held on the 16th March at the Hotel Garbe in Armaçao de Pera to review the trial of their group on LinkedIn which had been running for 6 weeks. Network Algarve had decided to trial LinkedIn as an alternative means of co-ordinating the group’s activities.

Helen Jones of Pelican Business Services who organised this review gave a superb presentation on how Network Algarve can benefit from the features and applications of LinkedIn and how it can operate more efficiently by using the forum to communicate with its’ members.

The trial received a very positive response and the decision was made to use LinkedIn for all future communications within Network Algarve and all further meetings and events will be announced in this way. Once again, we congratulate all the staff at the Garbe during our latest visit, and in the 20 days we didn't hear in conversation with fellow guests, a moan, groan, or complaint on any hotel subject. Just compliments.

Yours bosses should be proud of the loyal staff at the Garbe, both front line, and those we never meet who are behind the scents.

We have now completed 14 visits over 7 years and I think I can say in all honesty that apart from the weather this year, the Garbe continues to maintain a high standard.

Dr John Piper MB, BS, FRCS read Medicine at the University of London. Following postgraduate study in Surgery at the Royal Free Hospital, he worked as a consultant surgeon in hospitals in England until 1977, when, disillusioned by what he saw happening in the NHS, he took the post of visiting professor of a surgery at the University of Shiraz in Iran. Following that he worked in hospitals in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Ladysmith Hospital, South Africa and in 1985 created a department of surgery in the new Manapo Hospital in the Black South African Homeland of Qwaqwa on the Lesotho boarder. He has published a previous novel, Motherkillers, with the Book Guild Publishing. He now lives in Portugal with his wife, Odete.

Fruit Stand Loule Market

Especially when I’m traveling I’m not the sort of person who lives a very structured life. Routine and I don’t make the best of friends. But there are notable exceptions …and Saturday morning in Loulé is one of those exceptions.

Every time I’m in the Algarve you can find me in Loulé on Saturday morning because of the fabulous farmer’s market. But over time I’ve discovered that there is so much more to Loulé than just the farmer’s market. However, let’s start there.

Moorish Inspired Mercado Building

Right in the heart of town there is a huge market (mercado) building that houses fish mongers, butcher shops, small bakeries, fruit and vegetable dealers, pottery shops, café’s, florists, and a variety of other services. Outside, local farmers arrive and set up stands selling an incredible array of local goods. Fresh fruits and vegetables in season. Home-made Piri-Piri sauce, fresh and dried herbs, breads, cakes, local honey and seasonal flowers are always available. Cheeses, presunto (local air cured hams), chorizo and other sausages are for sale as is salt fish, candy and bedding plants.

Buying Bread

Whether you buy anything or not it is such fun to wander through the stalls, watching friends and family catch up on gossip, seeing what folks are buying, noticing what is fresh and in season this week. People are alive and engaged, weathered faces and hands ready with a smile, a nod, a willingness to show off what they have on offer. Nobody seems to mind having their picture taken.

Pottery of all designs awaits

I like to arrive early, stop at one of the local coffee shops and then saunter inside and outside of the market building while it is still fairly quiet. As the tour buses start to arrive around 10:30 or so, I have another coffee and then head off to explore other aspects of Loulé. That might mean walking half a block North from the main traffic circle and then heading East along a pedestrian mall to window shop in the many fashionable boutiques and shoe stores. I’ll head back to the main street and then back towards the mercado, continuing West about a block past it. By then there is usually a display set up on the sidewalk and into the courtyardand it is time for more shopping. I suspect there is a schedule somewhere, but I love not knowing what I’ll come across. One week it’ll be local artists selling their paintings, sculptures, cards and photographs. Another week it’ll be antique dealers, still another it’ll be crafts people offering jewelery, knick-knacks, knitted goods, etc. And sometimes it is local artisans selling breads, pastries, candies and other edibles. You just never know, which is a big part of its delight.

Getting spring water

Eventually I’ll head towards the old castle, perhaps stopping in at the small chapel that might be open, standing agog, yet again, at how much elaborate design can be crammed into one tiny room. Sometimes the street will be lined with local folks selling lotions, potions, hand made soaps and other goodies. If not, it is fun to swing down this side streetscape exploring art galleries, the Moroccan Tea Shop and hanging around the 150 year old community water fountain to watch the locals come and fill up on fresh spring water. Finally it is around the backside of the castle, through a small archway and onto yet another pedestrian walkway lined with shops of all kinds as well as pastry shops and cafés.

By late morning a party atmosphere has developed. Everyone seems to be in a good mood. A few street musicians are out and adding to the ambience. It is a time to savour life, perhaps finding a nice patio on which to enjoy another coffee and from which to watch people be people getting on with life!

Finally when my legs are tired it is time to find a restaurant and settle in for a big Saturday lunch. If you pick the right place, you’ll find yourself amongst local families celebrating the end of the week. Be aware that the market closes down at 1 o’clock. Be aware also that most of the Algarve closes down at 1 o’clock. It can be difficult to find a restaurant that’s open. When you find one and have eaten your fill, be like the locals and head home for a wonderfully long siesta, letting yourself lie back and re-live the vibrancy of the morning before you eventually decide what to cook with all that great food you couldn’t resist buying!

Bringing together a cast of five talented actors and comic plays, a new production ‘ Up, Down and Sideways’ was staged at the Raj in Hotel Garbe last week.

Following a splendid three-course Indian meal served in the stylish restaurant, the performance was a great success showcasing the commitments of the ‘Benefactors’ theatre group. All proceeds from their productions are donated to local charities.

Each of the one-act plays gives an insight into the partnership between a man and woman. Scripted by three different writers, two of them prize-winning Americans –Diana Amsterdam and Julius Tasca – and the third, British playwright and novelist, John Bowen. The common theme – misunderstandings between members of the opposite sex – commences with ‘Data Entry’.

When the lights come up on stage Kevin (played by Thomas Hartmann) is semi-naked lying prostrate and happy on a bed. His computer date, Carrie (performed by Diane Cantillon Ings) enters from the bathroom in a pink silk dressing gown. She reveals a story of deception and desire.

The dialogue is convincingly delivered, racy and engrossing, concluding as the couple jump blithely into bed.

The next drama, ‘One naked woman and a fully clothed man’ is set in the cinema stalls. We listen in on the thoughts of Janet (Barbara Mountford) as she sits beside her husband, Robert (John Mountford) watching an erotic film. Threatened by the movie stars pert breasts, she recalls that over the years her own have satisfied the needs of three hungry, teething babies. As thoughts of dustballs, children’s wellingtons and domestic life hone in, she wonders if the sexually explicit film might be turning her husband on!

The audience - watching the two actors watching the film - is presented with a range of highly entertaining facial expressions and amusingly eccentric body language.
The third play, ‘Fantasy Bond’ sees another couple Alice (Sandy Whittle) and Charles (Thomas Hartmann) in a Five Star hotel suite. Alice views the holiday as their second honeymoon but Charles is on the brink of announcing an affair.
Alice’s endearing personality is accurately portrayed, as is Charles, who procrastinates throughout the cleverly written script. The unexpected ending makes clear that, just like Sybil from Faulty Towers, Alice has the measure of her husband.
Bringing the show to a chronological conclusion, there is an older couple, Audrey (Diane Cantillon Ings) and Julian (John Mountford) in ‘Silver Anniversary’.
A dark comedy, it exposes the mutual destruction of a married couple. The audience is told, “the marriage hasn’t always been pleasant but it’s been easy.”
An exceptionally well-performed role, Diane Cantillon Ings is hard-boiled, straight-laced and angry, quite different from the frivolous Carrie having an affair in ‘Data Entry’.

Like the other actors Diane has been involved with many local productions, in her case often as director of ‘Aperitivo Performance Group,’ based at Sao Bras Museum. ‘Benefactors’ unites thespians from several different theatre groups across the Algarve, performing and raising money for worthwhile causes.

Lynn Love, Martin Binks, Carole Good-Dixon and Derrick Watts teamed up in February to have some fun while fund raising for the Pirilampos and Gaivota Childrens Homes in Albufeira.

After presenting two well attended Quiz Nights in the Hotel Garbe Lynn and Martin moved on to The Village Inn, Mexilhoeira de Carragacao where the inaugural 'Carole's Buddies Event' was being held. An after lunch session of Lynn and Martin's version of that old TV favourite 'Mr and Mrs' produced lots of laughter both from the audience and the three volunteer couples in the hot seats!

The three events raised 350 Euros for the charity and Lynn, Martin, Carole and Derrick would all like to thank everyone who attended and supported the raffles.

Lynn and Martin's April fund raising events will be for Castelo de Sonhos in Silves with an Easter Egg Hunt around Armacao de Pera followed by an Easter Bonnet Competition in the Hotel Garbe on Sunday 4th followed by a Quiz Night on 5th. APAA Pancake Day Fun - Contributed

The Pancake Day Races on the beach in front of the Hotel Garbe, Armação de Pêra, were sabotaged by high winds and a very high tide. However, Plan B was put into action and we all enjoyed an impromptu Beetle Drive.

Despite the howling wind outside there was lots of laughter inside with cries of “Beetle!” ringing out. Elsa Barrego, of ADAP animal charity from Portimão, won the first prize hamper in the Beetle Drive with the indomitable Carole Good-Dixon picking up the third prize wooden spoon, her niece having taken the second prize bottle of wine.

The Hotel sold wonderful pancakes and very generously gave all the profits to APAA. An APAA stall sold marmalades, chutneys, books and sundry small items. The tombola was a great success, with some lovely prizes to be won. Despite the awful weather everyone had tremendous fun and helped to raise €420 to be used in animal welfare.

There will be another opportunity to enjoy a Beetle Drive at 6.30pm on Saturday 27 February at Café-Bar Bacchus, Porches Pottery on the EN 125. Tickets costing €10 for members and €12 for non-members include a two course dinner and coffee. This event is limited to 32 people so please ring to reserve. Recipes from the Algarve - Bolo Delícia do Algarve - Algarve Cake

Ingredients: (12 servings)

1 lb of sugar
25 egg yolks
1/2 lb of Almonds
2 oz tinned pumpkin
3 oz. margarine
7 oz. Malabar Gourd jam (sometimes called the Fig Leaf Gourd)
Cinnamon
Cherries / and or other fruit for decoration.

How to Cook:
In a sauce pan, boil the sugar for a few minutes until it thickens and becomes gooey, fold the sugar into the egg yolks stirring very quickly.

Add the almonds, the margarine and the pumpkin (which should be in small chunks or slices) and replace on the heat until it thickens up again.

Remove from the heat. Butter a cake tin and line it with grease-proof paper. Pour in the mixture until it covers the bottom.

Then add a layer of cinnamon and then the Malabar Gourd. Repeat the layers until all ingredients used up.

Put in a pre-heated oven for 10 minutes. Decorate with cherries or other fruit.
