From our Golf Desk

Sent: sexta-feira, 16 de Janeiro de 2009 16:47
To: Golf Desk:

Dear Jane and Helen,

Thank you both very much for making the arrangements for my party's recent golf holiday. Everything worked very smoothly and the hotel staff were a delight as always.

The 'Garbe holiday' has become an established highlight of our year and, provided Gordon does not bankrupt the UK in the meantime, we shall look forward to seeing you again in 2010.

Best wishes,

Barry

Recipes from the Algarve - Cataplana

Ingredients:
(6 servings)
3 medium Spanish onions thinly sliced
3 cloves of crushed garlic
2 green bell peppers cut into small strips
Olive oil
1 bay leaf
1 lb tinned plum tomatoes
1/4 lb smoked ham, diced
2 oz. prosciutto ham, diced
1/4 lb portuguese sausage (or any other chorizo style sausage)
Small glass dry white wine
3 lb / 4 dozen fresh small clams in the shell, rinsed.
Some fresh parsley, coarsely chopped
Paprika / and or ground chili pepper

Cook the onions, garlic, and green peppers in the olive oil over a gentle heat until onions are golden. Add the bay leaf and the tomatoes, keep a quarter of their juice. Bring to 'simmering', then cover and reduce the heat to enable the sauce to cook slowly for 30 minutes. Then add the remaining tomato juice, the prosciutto, the smoked ham, and the chorizo. Cover and cook for another 30 minutes. Season with paprika or chili pepper
Spoon half the sauce into the bottom of the cataplana dish (or a similar style heavy pan with a lid), then lay the clams on top. Add the remaining sauce and the wine, cover tightly, cook for 15 minutes over a gentle heat, do not open.
Add parsley to decorate. Eat with fresh bread

December Photography Competition

Congratulations to Sue Bremner who has won our December Photography Competition.

Our Judge, Adrian Bell, an experienced wedding and portrait photographer comments:-

Wow! This month we have a wave of wonderful images, making it very difficult to choose between them. One of my particular favourites is number 8, the cave being assaulted by the power and drama of the ocean. I can imagine that image blown up to use as a wall hanging in the hotel.

However, image number 6 is my pick for this month. Everything about it is just perfect. A finely crafted composition with all its components in just the right spot to portray the beauty and serenity of the beach and yet there is plenty of action with the walker on the beach and the boat glimpsed between the gently swaying plants in the foreground. Wonderful.

Our thanks to everyone who participated in the 2008 Photography Competition click here to see
the rest of the photos.
Also a big thank you to Adrian Bell for judging each month. Adrian is an experienced wedding and portrait photographer and is Director of http://www.hi-impactphotography.com/ here in the Algarve. The company specialises in Commercial Images for the Real Estate industry creating high quality photography that sells property.

Murder on the Silver Screen - 30th January, 2009

Murder Mystery Dinner

"Samuel O'Snuffit, the movie mogul, is found shot dead at his own glittering party at sound stage 13. Number 13 proved to be his unlucky number - but who snuffed him out?"

This, the second of our 'Murder Mystery' evenings, is for tables of 10. We have characters like 'Cecil Lothario' - film director (his love life has a cast of thousands). 'Losta Morals' - actress (fluent in 5 languages, but never mastered how to say NO in any!)

Great fun and intrigue trying to work out who killed Samuel O'Snuffit over a relaxing meal in the Raj Restaurant, Hotel Garbe, Armacao de Pera.

29€ for a 3 course meal with wine, water and coffee, plus great entertainment. Book your table of 10 (or individual places) early to avoid disappointment.

Proceeds of the evening will go to APAA. (Association for Protection of Animals Algarve)

Comments from our last Murder Mystery - 'Murder at the Country Club':-

'I haven't laughed so much in ages' - Pat Camplin Smith

'I really enjoyed myself - along with everyone else, as I could tell when photographing each table - everyone was 'up for it' - Peter Kain.

For more information or to book your table, please call Vicki Good on 282 320260 or e-mail: info@hotelgarbe.com.

Walk In Wardrobe - Saturday, 7th February, 2009

THE WALK In Wardrobe is a girlie ‘swishing’ event in aid of charity to be held on February 7, 2009, and is the first of its kind in the region.

Swishing is the latest fashion craze, which involves getting your friends together to swap gorgeous clothes and party at the same time. Every lady must bring at least one good quality item to exchange.

Inspiration for this event was taken from the BBC’s ‘Twiggy’s Frock Exchange’ which featured women who each brought a number of items to swap, while being offered style advice from the likes of Twiggy and some other personalities from the world of fashion.

The Walk In Wardrobe gives local residents the chance to overhaul their wardrobe for free.

Tickets cost just 10 euros each which will go to the Lar Bom Samaritano (children’s home in Alvor). There will also be the chance to win some fantastic girlie prizes in the raffle that will take place during the event, which is being held at the Hotel Garbe in Armação de Pêra.

Space is limited, so please book your place by emailing thewalkinwardrobe@hotmail.com, or telephone 916277733.

More details will be put online at http://www.thealgarvewalkinwardrobe.blogspot.com/ as it becomes available.
